“We refuse to give up”

A Cultural Approach to Recovery

The Indigenous Recovery Planning (IRP) program is dedicated to supporting people on the path to recovery from addiction by embracing Native culture, traditions, and community as sources of strength. We strive to empower people to walk the Red Road on a journey toward healing and living healthier lives.

Since 2014, researchers from the Fort Peck community, Fort Peck Community College, and from Montana State University-Bozeman have been working together to develop a treatment program to help people recover from problems with alcohol and drugs. We all know someone lost to addiction, and we all know someone who is still struggling.

At the same time, we also know people who have recovered from addiction and are now living a healthy, content, and hopeful life—often devoting themselves to helping others in their community. The Indigenous Recovery Planning program resulted from these relationships and uses proven relapse prevention strategies, combined with cultural lessons and activities, to help people recover from alcohol and drug use.
